However, sometimes in many of our attempts to do well we overlook some very important information regarding what can and cannot be recycled. The city of Durham has a great chart to help you separate your recyclables from your other household disposables. Here’s a quick guide to good recycling habits:

Plastic bottles and jugs – Must have necks on the bottles, remove caps, rinse, and flatten.

Aluminum cans – Rinse and place tabs inside cans

Glass bottles and food containers – Remove lids and rinse, labels don’t need to be removed.

Cardboard and paper – MUST BE BROKEN DOWN AND FLATTENED, dry, cardboard preferable cut into 3×3 pieces, all plastic wrappers and ties removed from papers.

Some common Items that are NOT acceptable in the recycling bins are:

  • Plastic bags or wrappers
  • Waxed cardboard
  • Pizza boxes
  • Cleaning/aerosol/paint cans
  • Cookware and dishes
  • Hazardous waste (motor oil, antifreeze)

While some items cannot be recycled or even thrown directly into the trash, you can still dispose of them safely in Durham. Use these helpful links to continue to do your part for the environment and help us keep 1520 Magnolia Apartments and the City of Durham beautiful!
